EnergyVision acquires hydropower pioneer Turbulent

The acquisition fits within EnergyVision’s strategy to diversify its generation capacity

EnergyVision announces the acquisition of Turbulent, the Belgian developer of micro-hydropower installations. The acquisition follows shortly after the recent expansion of EnergyVision’s wind capacity and marks another strategic step in further strengthening and stabilising the company’s energy mix. With solar, wind and hydropower, EnergyVision is building an increasingly complete and reliable renewable generation profile for its customers.

EnergyVision and Turbulent were both named Belgium’s Most Sustainable Companies in 2023 (Trends Global Impact Awards), but their story goes back much further. The founders of Turbulent pitched their idea to EnergyVision’s CEO even before the company was officially incorporated. While EnergyVision focused on the Belgian market, Turbulent travelled the world. One thing, however, never changed: EnergyVision followed the young company – and its patented Flemish technology – from the very front row.

Turbulent is internationally known for its vortex micro plants, which generate green electricity from small water flows with a low head. The installations require no dam, need no heavy infrastructure and are fully fish-friendly. Because water flow is continuous, the plants provide stable output around the clock. That is precisely what makes them attractive to EnergyVision: even when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing, customers still need energy. Turbulent’s plants can provide that baseload in a highly ecological way.

“Hydropower is an extra piece of the puzzle in our story. We were already producing green energy through thousands of solar installations and a growing wind portfolio, but with Turbulent we are adding, for the first time, a stable, continuous source to our mix. Turbulent has built a smart and scalable solution. We bring scale and speed to roll it out where it will have the greatest impact. This is how we continue to choose renewables consciously, because they are the cheapest form of energy. That is also reflected in Greenpeace’s new sustainability ranking for Belgian energy suppliers, where we have been rewarded. We are going against the current: while green investments elsewhere are under pressure, we invest more every year, with a direct, positive impact on our customers’ energy bills.”

Turbulent will continue to develop projects across the globe, but together with EnergyVision it is also looking forward to delivering operational installations in Belgium over the coming years. Turbulent will retain its brand name and will be integrated as a separate business unit within EnergyVision.

“After many adventures, we are now entering calmer waters together with EnergyVision. The pipeline for 2026 looks strong internationally, with more than 5 million euros in signed projects. Our teams are excited about the future.”
Turbulent CEO Pieter Joseph
“Turbulent will contribute positively to our group results from day one. In typical EnergyVision fashion, we want to quickly turn this new business unit into a profitable growth engine within our group.”

About EnergyVision
EnergyVision is a fast-growing, integrated energy and mobility company, founded in 2014 and active in Belgium, China and Morocco. The company accelerates and broadens the energy transition by offering solar, wind and hydropower solutions, as well as charging infrastructure, without requiring any upfront investment from households or businesses. At the same time, EnergyVision acts as an energy supplier, directly linking the output of its own solar installations to the consumption of its customers. Customers benefit from lower energy bills, while surplus electricity is supplied by EnergyVision to other energy clients and to its own charging points. In this way, renewable energy becomes widely available while the electricity grid remains stable and reliable. Through this integrated approach, combined with smart, flexible and data-driven management of its own assets and network, EnergyVision delivers stable growth, technological innovation and a positive impact on the climate – always with the customer and the energy transition at the centre.
